Designing Hierarchical Honeycombs to Mimic the Mechanical Behaviour of Composites

Honeycombs are used ubiquitously in engineering applications as they have excellent out-of-plane strength and stiffness properties with respect to weight. This paper considers the of honeycombs in-plane direction, a direction that is significantly weaker less stiff than direction. We assess how judiciously locating structural hierarchy within honeycomb array can be geometric design principle direct consequences on mechanical behaviour honeycomb. Here, we use finite element methods reinforced metamaterials mimic unidirectional fibre composites. specifically incorporate hollow cells create metamaterial pseudo-composites, where hierarchical parts pseudo-fibres, pseudo-matrix. find pseudo-fibre contribution coefficients higher coefficient carbon plastics (CFRP). also elastic modulus pseudo-composites predicted using (Voigt model) rule mixtures good level accuracy.
