Designing an Artificial Agent for Cognitive Apprenticeship Learning of Elevator Pitch in Virtual Reality

Developing social skills like elevator pitch requires being situated within authentic activities and contexts, which is difficult to achieve on a daily basis. In this work, we explore whether an artificial agent with embodied feedback in virtual reality (VR) can foster learning experience. Previous works computer-mediated have shown that VR oral presentation competence for preuniversity junior undergraduates through delivering feedback. However, it unclear how well the experiences are students perceive coach VR, especially senior postgraduates seeking job research opportunities. To inform design of such system, conducted interviews experts observed real pitches. We then designed proof-of-concept coaching system three strategies: immediate, after-action, combination both. Through between-subject experiment 40 participants, studied learners’ perceptions under found receiving create stronger sense cognitive apprenticeship, i.e., helping from experts, help improve perception effect learning. further investigated pros cons different strategies discussed room improvement.
