Design of chord sidewall failure in RHS joints using steel grades up to S960

It is well known that the current design rules adopted by international codes such as ISO 14346 and guides, e.g., CIDECT guide No. 3, for chord sidewall failure in mild steel rectangular hollow section (RHS) joints under brace axial compression are considerably conservative, if RHS adequately supported out-of-plane. This paper presents an investigation into using grades up to S960. Representative existing methods reviewed, two alternative methods, i.e., modified bearing–buckling method Lan–Kuhn method, proposed. Up-to-date test numerical results reported literature compiled. A wide range of geometric parameters, S960 loading cases loading, in-plane bending out-of-plane covered. The proposed assessed against collated results. effects brace-to-chord height ratio, angle, grade stress ratio evaluated. shown can provide more consistent resistance predictions high-strength compression.
