Design and characterization of eutectic refractory high entropy alloys

چکیده

Eutectic alloys are natural in-situ composites with near-equilibrium structures, impressive strength-ductility trade-off, and perfect castability. In the current study, novel eutectic Al-Cr-Nb-Ti-Zr refractory high entropy (RHEAs) were designed using a CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) approach. A starting Nb30Ti40Zr30 (at.%) alloy was based on single-phase bcc solid solution. Alloying Cr Al induced formation hypoeutectic (Cr20Nb30Ti40Zr10, Al15Cr20Nb15Ti40Zr10, Al23Cr20Nb15Ti32Zr10), (Al28Cr20Nb15Ti27Zr10), hypereutectic (Al33Cr20Nb15Ti22Zr10) structures due to Laves phase precipitation. additions also resulted in B2 ordering changing polytype from C15 (fcc) C14 (hcp). transfer microstructure, connected amount's growth, increased alloys' compressive strength brittle-to-ductile transition temperature pronouncedly. Quantitative relationships between phase's volume fraction yield at different temperatures established. Detailed analysis after plastic deformation 800 °C demonstrated stability lamellar B2/C14 microstructure saving an initial orientation relationship (OR) (011)B2||(101¯3)C14, [11¯1]B2||[33¯01¯]C14 ensuring small lattice mismatch. The precipitation new D019 structure having (011)B2||(101¯3)C14||(02¯21)D019 OR revealed. obtained findings demonstrate approaches design RHEAs (nearly) promising balance mechanical characteristics.

A Promising New Class of High-Temperature Alloys: Eutectic High-Entropy Alloys

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) can have either high strength or high ductility, and a simultaneous achievement of both still constitutes a tough challenge. The inferior castability and compositional segregation of HEAs are also obstacles for their technological applications. To tackle these problems, here we proposed a novel strategy to design HEAs using the eutectic alloy concept, i.e. to achieve ...

The Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Refractory High-Entropy Alloys with High Plasticity

Refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) are promising materials used at high temperature, but their low plasticity restricts their application. Based on the valence electron concentration (VEC) principle, four kinds of RHEAs (ZrTiHfV0.5Nb0.5, Zr2.0TiHfVNb2.0, ZrTiHfNb0.5Mo0.5, and ZrTiHfNb0.5Ta0.5) are designed (VEC < 4.5). The experimental results show that the plasticity of these alloys was gr...

Multicomponent and High Entropy Alloys

This paper describes some underlying principles of multicomponent and high entropy alloys, and gives some examples of these materials. Different types of multicomponent alloy and different methods of accessing multicomponent phase space are discussed. The alloys were manufactured by conventional and high speed solidification techniques, and their macroscopic, microscopic and nanoscale structure...

Three Strategies for the Design of Advanced High-Entropy Alloys

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have recently become a vibrant field of study in the metallic materials area. In the early years, the design of HEAs was more of an exploratory nature. The selection of compositions was somewhat arbitrary, and there was typically no specific goal to be achieved in the design. Very recently, however, the development of HEAs has gradually entered a different stage. Unli...
