Descent for Discrete (Co)fibrations

We characterize the (effective) E-descent morphisms in the category Cat of small categories, when E is the class of discrete fibrations or the one of discrete cofibrations, and prove that every effective global-descent morphism is an effective E-descent morphism while its converse fails.

Cofibrations and Bicofibrations

The paper deals with the correlated concepts of cofibration and bicofibration in C∗-algebra theory. We study cofibrations of C∗-algebras introduced by Claude Schochet in [9] (see also [7]). Cofibrations are characterized by means of the mapping cylinder C∗-algebras. We also define and analyse the notion of bicofibration for C∗-algebras based on the topological model from [8] (see also [5]). As ...

On descent for coalgebras and type transformations

We find a criterion for a morphism of coalgebras over a Barr-exact category to be effective descent and determine (effective) descent morphisms for coalgebras over toposes in some cases. Also, we study some exactness properties of endofunctors of arbitrary categories in connection with natural transformations between them as well as those of functors that these transformations induce between co...

On Steepest Descent Algorithms for Discrete Convex Functions

This paper investigates the complexity of steepest descent algorithms for two classes of discrete convex functions, M-convex functions and L-convex functions. Simple tie-breaking rules yield complexity bounds that are polynomials in the dimension of the variables and the size of the effective domain. Combination of the present results with a standard scaling approach leads to an efficient algor...

Extensions of Maps as Fibrations and Cofibrations

Suppose /: X —• Y is a map of 1-connected spaces. In the "stable" range, roughly where the connectivity of Y exceeds the homology, or homotopy, dimension of X, it is well known that / can be extended as a cofibration C — X — Y, or respectively a fibration X — Y — B. A criterion is given for the existence of such extensions in a less restrictive "metastable" range. A main result is that if / is ...
