Depth of Magma Storage Under Iceland Controlled by Magma Fluxes

چکیده

Abstract The compositions of volcanic materials are sensitive to physical conditions in the underlying magmatic system. When basaltic melts saturated olivine‐plagioclase‐augite prior eruption, their can be used estimate pressure at which they last equilibrated. We developed PyOPAM, an open‐source tool that runs Python, and use this refreshed liquid‐barometer investigate relationship between final depths magma storage flux. first tested PyOPAM using 312 experimental glasses compiled from literature found 1 σ uncertainty is 1.13 kbar (±3 km). was then applied a data set 13,400 analyses Iceland, where suspected controls on flux well constrained. Of these, 3807 return robust estimates, constraining pre‐eruptive for 23 30 Icelandic systems. Our results indicate pressures Iceland linked melt‐flux mantle. This finding consistent with previous models linking spreading rates global mid‐ocean ridge In addition, we provide clear evidence flux, rather than rate alone, key control distribution melt centers. Increased associated shoaling depths, indicating mantle fluxes dictate long‐term stabilization extensive regions shallower 10 km. Quantitative relationships test computational transcrustal

Depth of origin of magma in eruptions

Many volcanic hazard factors--such as the likelihood and duration of an eruption, the eruption style, and the probability of its triggering large landslides or caldera collapses--relate to the depth of the magma source. Yet, the magma source depths are commonly poorly known, even in frequently erupting volcanoes such as Hekla in Iceland and Etna in Italy. Here we show how the length-thickness r...

Magma storage in a strike-slip caldera

Silicic calderas form during explosive volcanic eruptions when magma withdrawal triggers collapse along bounding faults. The nature of specific interactions between magmatism and tectonism in caldera-forming systems is, however, unclear. Regional stress patterns may control the location and geometry of magma reservoirs, which in turn may control the spatial and temporal development of faults. H...

Eruptible magma.

For those who remember the classic disaster-docudrama Supervolcano (BBC-Discovery Channel 2005), the adjective “eruptible” is likely to ring a bell. Set in the near future and generally quite scientifically literate, the movie envisions volcanologists trying desperately to evaluate the near-term threat posed by the giant Yellowstone magmatic system. At the heart of their mission, and of the dra...

Magma Ascent by Porous Flow

Porous flow of buoyant liquid through partially molten rock is regarded as the initial transport process leading to magma segregation in the mantle. Recent work has identified the importance of matrix deformation and compaction in this process. We present finite-difference calculations based on a generalized form of Darcy's law that includes matrix deformation, in two-dimensional Cartesian and ...

Oblique rift opening revealed by reoccurring magma injection in central Iceland

Extension deficit builds up over centuries at divergent plate boundaries and is recurrently removed during rifting events, accompanied by magma intrusions and transient metre-scale deformation. However, information on transient near-field deformation has rarely been captured, hindering progress in understanding rifting mechanisms and evolution. Here we show new evidence of oblique rift opening ...
