Depositional and Diagenetic Processes of Martian Lacustrine Sediments as Revealed at Pahrump Hills by the Mars Hand Lens Imager, Gale Crater, Mars

چکیده

The Murray formation represents fine-grained sedimentary deposition in lacustrine environments within Gale crater, Mars. Both the overall thickness of and its broad uniformity character suggest potential for a long-lived, groundwater-supported lake system. Rock textures were imaged by Mars Hand Lens Imager camera at Pahrump Hills location, which lowermost formation. We analyze data from to refine earlier estimates grain size distribution, as well make detailed observations diagenetic features modification primary sedimentological features. These resulting interpretations provide look dynamic behavior systems on lower portions this exposure are characterized planar laminated, material; predominant region is smaller than that very fine sand. Diagenetic mineral precipitation also prominent these layers, evidenced likely situ lenticular crystals, preferential cementation laminae several late-diagenetic crystal clusters, secondary previously deposited crystals. upper locality coarser-grained, varicolored, contain cross-stratified variation over relatively thin stratigraphic interval indicates rapid fluctuation hydrodynamic crater lake, similar observed shallow-water regions terrestrial closed basin lakes.

Mars atmosphere. Mars methane detection and variability at Gale crater.

Reports of plumes or patches of methane in the martian atmosphere that vary over monthly time scales have defied explanation to date. From in situ measurements made over a 20-month period by the tunable laser spectrometer of the Sample Analysis at Mars instrument suite on Curiosity at Gale crater, we report detection of background levels of atmospheric methane of mean value 0.69 ± 0.25 parts pe...

A habitable fluvio-lacustrine environment at Yellowknife Bay, Gale crater, Mars.

The Curiosity rover discovered fine-grained sedimentary rocks, which are inferred to represent an ancient lake and preserve evidence of an environment that would have been suited to support a martian biosphere founded on chemolithoautotrophy. This aqueous environment was characterized by neutral pH, low salinity, and variable redox states of both iron and sulfur species. Carbon, hydrogen, oxyge...

Diagenesis and clay mineral formation at Gale Crater, Mars

The Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity found host rocks of basaltic composition and alteration assemblages containing clay minerals at Yellowknife Bay, Gale Crater. On the basis of the observed host rock and alteration minerals, we present results of equilibrium thermochemical modeling of the Sheepbed mudstones of Yellowknife Bay in order to constrain the formation conditions of its second...
