Ionization of K-shell electrons by electron or positron impact

The single ionization of inner-shell electrons by electron or positron impact are the fundamental processes, which still attract considerable interest in collision theory, experimental studies, and various applications. To predict the ionization cross sections, one usually employs either sophisticated numerical approaches or empirical and semiempirical formulas. Significant efforts have been al...

K-shell ionization by antiprotons.

We present calculations for the impact-parameter dependence of K-shell ionization rates in p-Cu and in p-Ag collisions at various projectile energies. We show that the effect of the attractive Coulomb potential on the Rutherford trajectory and the antibinding effect caused by the negative charge of the antiproton result in a considerable increase of the ionization probability. Total ionization ...

Electrons in a Shell

The spatial distribution of electrons inside an empty spherical shell with an impenetrable wall is considered. It is shown that with a large number N of non-relativistic electrons, the electrons are concentrated near the wall in a layer of thickness 5 / 3 5 / 2 5 / 1 ~ B a a N ⋅ ⋅ δ − , where a is the radius of the shell, and aB is the Bohr radius. In this brief note, we consider the spatial di...

Mono-energetic GeV electrons from ionization in a radially polarized laser beam.

Fields of a radially polarized laser beam developed recently [Y. I. Salamin, Opt. Lett.31, 2619 (2006)] are employed to show that electrons produced by atomic ionization near the focus may be accelerated to GeV energies. Conditions for producing a mono-energetic and well-collimated electron beam are discussed.

Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect for multihundred GeV electrons

Experimental results for the bremsstrahlung energy loss of 149, 207, and 287 GeV electrons in thin Ir, Ta, and Cu targets are presented. For each target and energy, a comparison between simulated values based on the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal ~LPM! suppression of incoherent bremsstrahlung is shown. For the electron energies investigated, the LPM effect enters the quantum regime where the recoil ...
