چکیده
Definiteness effects have been attested in the literature for some DPs complementing HAVE (= English and their counterparts other languages). In this paper, which focuses on Spanish, demonstrative are shown to be affected by type-token distinction contexts: internal argument of receives a type reading these cases rejects to-ken interpretation. Demonstratives, Definite Descriptions and Definiteness∗
Kaplan (1989) showed us that demonstratives are special for two reasons. First, they are connected to the context: the “canonical” uses of demonstratives (to adopt Roberts’s (2002) terminology) are associated with demonstrations, extralinguistic acts that determine the reference. Second, they’re a particularly clear case of constituents with what Kaplan calls “prepropositional” content – that i...
متن کاملThe Type-Token Distinction and the Mind and Brain Sciences
This paper is an analysis of scientific types – the categories of a scientific taxonomy. I argue that the philosophical view about mental types stands in contrast to the real nature of scientific types, which is in turn responsible for the mind-body problem. Since the view on the relation between psychology and neurology was broadened to the status about special sciences in general, my argument...
متن کاملA Note on Mandarin Possessives, Demonstratives, and Definiteness
Yang (2004) observes that in Mandarin, an initial possessor phrase (PossessorP) may be followed by a bare noun as in (1), or by a possessee phrase that can be headed by a numeral and classifier, [Numeral + CL + N], as in (2) or by a demonstrative, [Dem + (Numeral) + CL + N] as in (3). (In all the examples in this section, we begin with Yang’s own initial glosses and translations. The interpreta...
متن کاملKnowledge how, ability, and the type-token distinction
This paper examines the relationship between knowing how to G and the ability to G, which is typically presented in one of the following ways: (a) knowing how to G entails the ability to G; (b) knowing how to G does not entail the ability to G. In an attempt to reconcile these two putatively opposing positions, I distinguish between type and token actions. It is my contention that S can know ho...
