Degradation of ancient Maya carved tuff stone at Copan and its bacterial bioconservation

چکیده
Abstract Much stone sculptural and architectural heritage is crumbling, especially in intense tropical environments. This exemplified by significant losses on carvings made of tuff at the Classic Maya site Copan. Here we demonstrate that Copan primarily decays due to stress generated humidity-related clay swelling resulting spalling material loss, a damaging process appears be facilitated microbial bioweathering minerals (particularly feldspars). Such weathering not prevented traditional polymer- alkoxysilane-based consolidants applied past. As an alternative such unsuccessful conservation treatments, prove effectiveness bioconservation treatment based application sterile nutritional solution selectively activates stone´s indigenous bacteria able produce CaCO 3 biocement. The generates bond with original matrix significantly strengthen areas while unexpectedly, bacterial exopolymeric substances (EPS) impart hydrophobicity reduce swelling. environmentally-friendly effectively safely preserve fragile stones conditions, opening possibility for its widespread area, elsewhere.

An iterative 3D GIS analysis of the role of visibility in ancient Maya landscapes: A case study from Copan, Honduras
For several decades, Geographic Information Systems (GISs) have held center stage in archaeological studies of ancient landscapes. Recently, three-dimensional (3D) technologies such as airborne LiDAR and aerial photogrammetry are allowing us to acquire inordinate amounts of georeferenced 3D data to locate, map, and visualize archaeological sites within their surrounding landscapes. GIS offers l...

Analysis of ancient residential groups has been hampered by not fully understanding their physical and social composition. Debate exists over whether these groups were occupied by single extended families or by several social units. متن کاملThe fractal geometry of ancient Maya settlement
Ancient Maya settlement patterns exhibit fractal geometry both within communities and across regions. Fractals are self-similar sets of fractional dimension. In this paper, we show how Maya settlement patterns are logically and statistically self-similar. We demonstrate how to measure the fractal dimensions (or Hausdorff–Besicovitch dimensions) of several data sets. We describe nonlinear dynami...
