Deepening or delinking? Innovative capacity and global value chain participation in the IT industry

Abstract Innovation trajectories in global value chains (GVCs) can take differentiated pathways. In this article, we address the question: do stylized emerge from analysis of countries’ relative innovative capacity (IC) and GVC participation? We draw explorative insights a cluster 45 countries on two subsectors information technology industry: hardware software. Our uncovers remarkable differences between software across countries. identify different discuss sectoral specificities that contribute explaining their existence. The association strengthening IC deeper insertion GVCs applies only to handful subsector. specificity raises questions for future research innovation GVCs.
