Decadal changes in parrotfish assemblages around reefs of Guam, Micronesia

چکیده

Abstract Modern coral reefs face substantial threats that endanger their capacity to function and provide resources for human populations. Chronic pressure through exploitation land-based pollution has led reef degradation lower productivity. More recently, this is compounded with successive episodes of bleaching across the tropical oceans. However, response trajectories exploitation, habitat degradation, local management may not be straightforward, as these ecosystems are incredibly complex. We employed a comprehensive standardized survey parrotfish assemblages within systems in Guam examine biomass decade change. Parrotfishes represent one most commercially ecologically important coastal throughout Micronesia. found declined by nearly 30% over course ten years, concomitant decreases grazing bioerosion rates at similar magnitude. There was evidence fishery playing role, but overall patterns were always aligned hypothesis fishery-induced decline. For example, two-thirds marine-protected area sites mean body length stable several highly targeted species. Further, decline stemmed from small species higher resilience whereby three vulnerable target either maintained or increased total biomass. The ultimate drivers assemblage likely complex mixture change multiple stressors, responses measures. potential future production ecological merits continuous monitoring proactive management.

Corallimorph and Montipora Reefs in Ulithi Atoll, Micronesia: documenting unusual reefs

Here we report the presence of two unusual reef types at Ulithi Atoll, Yap State, Federated States of Micronesia: 1. a corallimorph-dominated reef off the island of Mogmog is found within an otherwise coral-dominated area, and 2. a general spread of Montipora reefs that were found to dominate the reef landscapes near inhabited islands. The Montipora reefs primarily occur near villages and in di...

Seasonal dynamics and decadal changes of benthic foraminiferal assemblages in the western Baltic Sea (NW Europe)

Living benthic foraminiferal assemblages were monitored between January and July 2004 in the Kiel Bight, Baltic Sea. Phytoplankton blooms and the deposition of organic detritus were depicted by fluorometer hydro casts and pigment concentrations in surface sediments. Three depositional pulses of organic matter were identified by high phytoplankton concentrations above the sea floor and elevated ...

Age-based and reproductive biology of the Pacific Longnose Parrotfish Hipposcarus longiceps from Guam

The Pacific longnose parrotfish Hipposcarus longiceps (Valenciennes 1840) represents a prime fishery resource throughout much of the tropical Pacific. In this study, we sampled the species from the Guam commercial fishery market across five consecutive years to characterize reproductive and age-based demographic information imperative for informed fishery management. Compared with other parrotf...

Decadal changes in Pacific carbon

[1] This paper uses the extended multiple linear regression (eMLR) technique to investigate changes over the last decade in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) inventories on a meridional line (P16 along 152 W) up the central Pacific and on a zonal line (P02 along 30 N) across the North Pacific. Maximum changes in the total DIC concentrations along P02 are 15–20 mmol kg 1 over 10 years, somewhat h...

Fish Assemblages on Estuarine Artificial Reefs: Natural Rocky-Reef Mimics or Discrete Assemblages?

If the primary goal of artificial reef construction is the creation of additional reef habitat that is comparable to adjacent natural rocky-reef, then performance should be evaluated using simultaneous comparisons with adjacent natural habitats. Using baited remote underwater video (BRUV) fish assemblages on purpose-built estuarine artificial reefs and adjacent natural rocky-reef and sand-flat ...
