Dating the megalithic culture of laos: Radiocarbon, optically stimulated luminescence and U/Pb zircon results

چکیده
The megalithic jar sites of Laos (often referred to as the Plain Jars) remain one Southeast Asia’s most mysterious and least understood archaeological cultures. sites, recently inscribed UNESCO World Heritage, host hollowed stone jars, up three metres in height, which appear scattered across landscape, alone or clustered groups more than 400. Until now, it has not been possible estimate when jars were first placed on landscape from where was sourced. Geochronological analysis using age detrital zircons demonstrates a likely quarry source for largest sites. Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating suggests positioned at potentially early late second millennium BC. Radiocarbon skeletal remains charcoal samples places mortuary activity around 9-13th century AD, suggesting have maintained ritual significance period their initial placement until historic times.

Optically Stimulated Luminescence Dating (Instrument Design for Mars Applications)
Introduction: To examine the geological and climatic history on Mars, we investigate an instrument design for robotic, in-situ, Optically Stimulated Luminescence dating (OSL). In this paper, we discuss the basic concepts of OSL, its benefits, and how this technique can be utilized on Mars. Also presented are the vital electronics needed for an instrument design and some of their basic operation...
متن کاملRadiocarbon and Blue Optically Stimulated Luminescence Chronologies of the Oitavos Consolidated Dune (western Portugal)
The dune of Oitavos, the underlying paleosol, and Helix sp. gastropod shells found within the paleosol were dated using a combination of radiocarbon and blue optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). The organic component of the paleosol produced a significantly older age (~20,000 cal BP) than the OSL age measurement (~15,000 yr), while 14C age measurements on the inorganic component and the gas...
متن کاملPrecision and Accuracy in the Optically Stimulated Luminescence Dating of Sedimentary Quartz: a Status Review
Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of light-exposed sediments is used increasingly as a mean of establishing a sediment deposition chronology in a wide variety of late Quaternary studies. There has been considerable technological development in the last few years – in instrumentation, in the preferred mineral, and in various measurement protocols. New approaches to the latter, espec...
متن کاملOptically-stimulated luminescence profiling and dating of historic agricultural terraces in Catalonia (Spain)
Dating agricultural terraces is a notoriously difficult problem for archaeologists. The frequent occurrence of residual material in terrace soils and the potential for post-depositional disturbance mean that conventional artefactual and lab-based dating methods often provide unreliable dates. In this paper we present a new technique using luminescence field profiling coupled with OSL dating to ...
متن کاملProgress towards robotic in-situ dating of martian sediments using optically stimulated luminescence
Recent exploratory efforts to reveal the evolution and the climatic history of Mars have shown that the planet is still active. The surface of Mars has been, and continues to be, shaped by fluvial, eolian and glacial processes. The timeframe of these events is, however, poorly established. We describe efforts and challenges to adapt optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating for robotic in-...
