Dating Continental Subduction Beneath the Samail Ophiolite: Garnet, Zircon, and Rutile Petrochronology of the As Sifah Eclogites, NE Oman

چکیده
Studies of the high-pressure (HP) As Sifah eclogites in NE Saih Hatat Window, Oman, have used different combinations radiometric dating results (Ar/Ar, Sm-Nd vs. U-Pb, Rb-Sr) to interpret disparate tectonic models for timing, geometry, and cause continental subduction—including its relationship Samail Ophiolite. To determine timing subduction, we coupled petrochronological analyses major (garnet) accessory phases (zircon rutile) from highest grade metamorphic rocks (As eclogites) Hatat. Early Permian (283.8 ± 0.7 Ma) tuffaceous zircon cores are consistent with earlier interpretations that were sourced a distal portion Arabian margin. Data range bulk compositions assemblages consistently suggest single event garnet growth ?81 77 Ma—though slight, offsets (re)crystallization between lithologies. These new data confirm previous HP metamorphism NE-dipping subduction zone beneath obducted Ophiolite; there is no robust evidence an ?110 Ma or SW-dipping plate. Combined other constraints, our unit was subducted at rates similar small bodies, followed by two stages cooling exhumation—likely associated dragging mantle depths mafic root, initial phase rapid exhumation depths, lengthy residence (?40 My) lower middle crust.

The Role of Deformation in the Formation of Metamorphic Gradients: Ridge Subduction beneath the Oman Ophiolite
Two tectonic scenarios have been proposed for genesis and emplacement of the Oman ophiolite. One suggests that the ophiolite was generated at a spreading center, the other suggests generation within an intraoceanic arc. An integrated thermal and kinematic model of the temperature, stress, rock type, and displacement fields during early stages of the emplacement ofthe Oman ophiolite was develope...
متن کاملGeological and Geochemical Controls on Subsurface Microbial Life in the Samail Ophiolite, Oman
Microbial abundance and diversity in deep subsurface environments is dependent upon the availability of energy and carbon. However, supplies of oxidants and reductants capable of sustaining life within mafic and ultramafic continental aquifers undergoing low-temperature water-rock reaction are relatively unknown. We conducted an extensive analysis of the geochemistry and microbial communities r...
متن کاملFossils of hydrothermal vent worms from cretaceous sulfide ores of the samail ophiolite, oman.
Fossil worm tubes of Cretaceous age preserved in the Bayda massive sulfide deposit of the Samail ophiolite, Oman, are apparently the first documented examples of fossils embedded in massive sulfide deposits from the geologic record. The geologic setting of the Bayda deposit and the distinctive mineralogic and textural features of the fossiliferous samples suggest that the Bayda sulfide deposit ...
متن کاملCoexisting serpentine and quartz from carbonate-bearing serpentinized peridotite in the Samail Ophiolite, Oman
Tectonically exposed mantle peridotite in the Oman Ophiolite is variably serpentinized and carbonated. Networks of young carbonate veins are prevalent in highly serpentinized peridotite, particularly near low-temperature alkaline springs emanating from the peridotite. An unusual feature in some samples is the coexistence of serpentine and quartz, which is not commonly observed in serpentinites....
متن کاملFormation and exhumation of blueschists and eclogites from NE Oman: new perspectives from Rb–Sr and Ar/Ar dating
Seven eclogite facies samples from lithologically different units which structurally underlie the Semail ophiolite were dated by the Ar/Ar and Rb–Sr methods. Despite extensive efforts, phengite dated by the Ar/Ar method yielded saddle, hump or irregularly shaped spectra with uninterpretable isochrons. The total gas ages for the phengite ranged from 136 to 85 Ma. Clinopyroxene–phengite, epidote–...
