Dark current studies of an L-band normal conducting RF gun

L-band normal conducting RF guns operating at long pulse mode and high gradient are installed the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser (European XFEL) Free-electron LASer in Hamburg (FLASH) as brightness electron sources. The dark current generated from gun may cause severe issues, such component activation, superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavity quench undulator degradation. is one of parameters limiting accelerating performance. In this paper, we report tracking simulations, including detailed field distribution gap between cathode plug copper hole backplane. transmission ratios emission regions were simulated for different geometries insertions. imaging measurements conducted an (gun 4.2) Photo Injector Test facility DESY Zeuthen (PITZ). comparison before after a 180 degree rotation shows main emissions come corner Cs2Te film edge, which consistent with simulations.
