چکیده

Cytogenetic techniques provide powerful insights on species-rich taxa–such as ants–allowing better understanding of their biodiversity. Some hints evolutionary paths can be observed through comparative populational cytogenetics among different ant groups. In this study, the karyotype Strumigenys louisianae Roger from Amazon rainforest is described and showed diploid chromosome number 26 chromosomes. This configuration intriguingly contrasts with already for species Atlantic only 2n = 4 18S rDNA site were detected pericentromeric region long arm a metacentric pair co-localizing GC-rich chromatin. Recurrent synonymizations S. may not reflect status taxon. The karyotypic differences observable morphological variation between populations both localities corroborates idea complex within louisianae. morphology Amazonian similar to that United States, type locality. On other hand, specimens are more junior synonym unidentata Mayr. study reinforces need taxonomical revision in by means integrative taxonomy approaches.

The First Cytogenetic Data on Strumigenys louisianae Roger, 1863 (Formicidae: Myrmicinae: Dacetini): The Lowest Chromosome Number in the Hymenoptera of the Neotropical Region

In the present study, the first cytogenetic data was obtained for the ant species Strumigenys louisianae, from a genus possessing no previous cytogenetic data for the Neotropical region. The chromosome number observed was 2n = 4, all possessing metacentric morphology. Blocks rich in GC base pairs were observed in the interstitial region of the short arm of the largest chromosome pair, which may...

A New Species of Discothyrea Roger from Mauritius and a New Species of Proceratium Roger from Madagascar (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

The worker of Discothyrea berlita sp. nov. from Mauritius is described. This is the first record of the genus from Mauritius. D. berlita is known from a single locality, Le Pouce, a small sanctuary of native ants on an island overrun with invasive ant species. Proceratium avium is recollected at Le Pouce and is the senior synonym of Proceratium avioide de Andrade (syn. nov.). The practice of ma...

The Tetramorium tortuosum species group (Hymenoptera, Formicidae, Myrmicinae) revisited - taxonomic revision of the Afrotropical T. capillosum species complex

In this study we revise the taxonomy of the Tetramorium tortuosum species group members encountered in the Afrotropical region, which we have placed in its own subgroup: the Tetramorium capillosum species complex. We re-describe the two previously known species Tetramorium capillosum Bolton and Tetramorium tabarum Bolton, and describe the new species Tetramorium hecate sp. n. The geographic dis...

Habitat preferences of Strumigenys ants in western Japan (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

The ant tribe Dacetini contains more than 800 species (Bolton et al. 2006). Many dacetine ants are specialized predators on soil inhabiting arthropods such as Collembola, Acarina, and to some extent also Diplura (Brown and Wilson 1959; Masuko 1984, 2009ab; Wilson 1953). Due to their peculiar morphological characteristics related to this specialized predation, dacetine ants have attracted the in...

The comparative exocrine chemistry of nine Old World species of Messor (Formicidae: Myrmicinae)

A comparative study of the exocrine chemistry of Messor bouvieri, M. barbarus, M. lusitanicus, M. marocanus, M. arenarius, M. ebeninus, M. rugosus, M. angularis, and M. cephalotes has been carried out. Anabasine and related nicotinoids were detected in all these species except for M. barbarus, M. lusitanicus, and M. rugosus. The alkenes from the Dufour’s glands of these ants were shown to be 1-...
