Cyclotrons Operated for Nuclear Medicine and Radiopharmacy in the German Speaking D-A-CH Countries: An Update on Current Status and Trends

Background Cyclotrons form a central infrastructure and are resource of medical radionuclides for the development new radiotracers as well production supply clinically established radiopharmaceuticals patient care in nuclear medicine. Aim To provide an updated overview number characteristics cyclotrons that currently use within radiopharmaceutical sciences to be used Nuclear Medicine Germany (D), Austria (A) Switzerland (CH). Methods Publicly available information on cyclotron was (i) consolidated updated, (ii) supplemented by selective desktop research and, last but not least, (iii) validated members committee academic “Working Group Radiochemistry Radiopharmacy” (AGRR), consisting radiochemists radiopharmacists D-A-CH countries belonging German Society (DGN), Radiopharmaceuticals Committee DGN. Results In total, 42 were identified being operated radionuclide imaging therapy clinics, 32 them Germany, 4 6 Switzerland. Two thirds reported (67%) universities, university hospitals or institutions close hospital, less by/in cooperation with industrial partners (29%) non-academic clinic/ PET-center (5%). Most (88%) running up 18 MeV proton beams, which is sufficient most common cyclotron-based PET imaging. Discussion The data presented academically-updated their countries. this context, we discuss current developments trends view these countries, specific focus organizational aspects.
