Current permissible levels of metal pollutants harm terrestrial invertebrates

چکیده

The current decline of invertebrates worldwide is alarming. Several potential causes have been proposed but metal pollutants, while being widespread in the air, soils and water, so far largely overlooked. Here, we reviewed results 527 observations effects arsenic, cadmium, lead mercury on terrestrial invertebrates. These four well-studied metals are considered as priorities for public health which international regulatory guidelines exist. We found that they all significantly impact physiology behavior invertebrates, even at levels below those recommended ‘safe’ humans. Our call a revision thresholds to better protect appear be more sensitive pollution than vertebrates. More fundamental research broader range compounds species needed improve develop conservation plans ecosystem services.

Evolution of Terrestrial Burrowing Invertebrates

INTRODUCTION The important role of fauna in modifying the regolith by redistributing particles is now widely acknowledged (e.g., Paton et al. 1995). One issue of some importance to regolith studies and the interpretation of paleosols is how the role of terrestrial bioturbation has evolved since life first invaded the land areas of Earth in the Early Paleozoic. This particular issue was raised d...

Immunotoxicological Threats of Pollutants in Aquatic Invertebrates

Immunology deals with the physiological activity of organisms to defend against pathogen and toxin invasion. Invertebrates residing in aquatic ecosystems often face toxicological threat arises from habitat pollution. The aquatic habitat of invertebrates is in the precarious risk of pollution caused by diverse groups of environmental toxins. Immunotoxins have been considered as a special group o...

Increasing Levels of Metal Pollutants in River Kubanni Zaria, Nigeria

The study examines the increasing levels of concentration of metal pollutants in river Kubanni Zaria, Nigeria. The main sources of data for the study are sediments from four distinctive zones of river Kubanni and materials from previous studies on the river. The samples were collected from the river for a period of eleven months, they were prepared in the laboratory and the Instrumental Nitroge...

Modeling zinc toxicity for terrestrial invertebrates.

Acute and chronic ecotoxicity tests with zinc were performed with the earthworm Eisenia fetida, the potworm Enchytraeus albidus, and the springtail Folsomia candida. To assess the influence of the soil type on zinc toxicity for these soil invertebrates, these tests were carried out in a standard artificial soil, a sandy and a loamy field soil. Based on the results of this experimental work and ...

Effects of terrestrial pollutants on insect parasitoids.

Parasitoids are important organisms in the regulation of insect herbivores in natural, urban, and agricultural ecosystems. The impact of pollutants acting on parasitoids has not been extensively reviewed. This prompted us to propose a falsifiable null hypothesis (pollutants have no effects on parasitoids) and two alternative hypotheses (pollution negatively or positively affects parasitoids) to...
