Current-induced breakdown of the quantum anomalous Hall effect

چکیده

The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) realizes dissipationless longitudinal resistivity and quantized resistance without the need of an external magnetic field. However, when reducing device dimensions or increasing current density, abrupt breakdown state occurs with a relatively small critical current, limiting applications QAHE. We investigate mechanism this by studying multi-terminal devices identified that electric field created between opposing chiral edge states lies at origin. propose electric-field-driven percolation two-dimensional charge puddles in gapped surface compensated topological-insulator films is most likely cause breakdown.

Current distribution in Hall bars and breakdown of the quantum Hall effect

A numerical study is made of current distribution in small Hall bars with disorder. It is observed , in particular, that in the Hall-plateau regime the Hall current tends to concentrate near the sample edges while it diminishes on average in the sample interior as a consequence of localization. Also reported is another numerical experiment on a related, but rather independent topic, the breakdo...

In-plane magnetization-induced quantum anomalous Hall effect.

The quantum Hall effect can only be induced by an out-of-plane magnetic field for two-dimensional electron gases, and similarly, the quantum anomalous Hall effect has also usually been considered for systems with only out-of-plane magnetization. In the present work, we predict that the quantum anomalous Hall effect can be induced by in-plane magnetization that is not accompanied by any out-of-p...

Theory of the breakdown of the quantum Hall effect

Breakdown of the quantum Hall effect at high values of injected current is explained as a consequence of an abrupt formation of a metallic conduction path from one edge of the sample to the other. Such a path is formed when regions of compressible liquid, where the long-range disorder potential is screened, get connected due to the strong electric field. Our theory explains various features of ...

Quantum anomalous Hall effect with higher plateaus.

The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in magnetic topological insulators is driven by the combination of spontaneous magnetic moments and spin-orbit coupling. Its recent experimental discovery raises the question if higher plateaus can also be realized. Here, we present a general theory for a QAH effect with higher Chern numbers and show by first-principles calculations that a thin film magne...

Temperature dependence of the breakdown of the quantum Hall effect studied by induced currents

We have developed a model of the high-current breakdown of the integer quantum Hall effect, as measured in contactless experiments using a highly-sensitive torsion balance magnetometer. The model predicts that, for empirically “low-mobility” samples sm,75 m2 V−1 s−1d, the critical current for breakdown should decrease with, and have a linear dependence on, temperature. This prediction is verifi...
