Crusader Hirelings or Loyal Subjects? Evolving Jihadist Perspectives on Christian Minorities in the Middle East

In contrast to common assumptions, jihadist movements’ view of Christian minorities in the Middle East has been neither unambiguous nor static. It changes according overall political conflict region and is characterized by specific, unpredictable struggles that arise locally. By studying official statements al-Qaeda ISIS, their ideological strategic writings conduct vis-à-vis indigenous Christians East, this article seeks paint a more complex picture how jihadists perceive minority. One key finding foreign ‘Crusaders’ are not single phenomenon or foe conceptual worldview jihadists. Second, rather than seeking eradicate completely, movements wish primarily demonstrate dominance Muslims role as legitimate rulers over minorities. Third, terrorist attacks on churches have devastating deadly, especially Egypt Iraq, but local top priority target for most groups.
