Crossmodal spatial distraction across the lifespan

چکیده
The ability to resist distracting stimuli whilst voluntarily focusing on a task is fundamental our everyday cognitive functioning. Here, we investigated how this develops, and thereafter declines, across the lifespan using single task/experiment. Young children (5–7 years), older (10–11 young adults (20–27 (62–86 years) were presented with complex visual scenes. Endogenous (voluntary) attention was engaged by having participants search for target either left or right side of display. onset scenes preceded – at stimulus asynchronies (SOAs) 50, 200, 500 ms task-irrelevant sound (an exogenous crossmodal spatial distractor) delivered same opposite as target, simultaneously both sides (cued, uncued, neutral trials, respectively). Age-related differences revealed, especially in extreme age-groups, which showed greater impact distractors. highly susceptible distraction shortest SOA (50 ms), whereas distracted all SOAs, showing significant capture effects during task. By contrast, adults' performance not significantly affected distraction. Overall, these findings present detailed picture developmental trajectory endogenous resistance from childhood old age demonstrate different efficiency coping four age-groups studied.

Spatial patterns of close relationships across the lifespan
The dynamics of close relationships is important for understanding the migration patterns of individual life-courses. The bottom-up approach to this subject by social scientists has been limited by sample size, while the more recent top-down approach using large-scale datasets suffers from a lack of detail about the human individuals. We incorporate the geographic and demographic information of...
متن کاملEpigenetics across the human lifespan
Epigenetics has the potential to explain various biological phenomena that have heretofore defied complete explication. This review describes the various types of endogenous human developmental milestones such as birth, puberty, and menopause, as well as the diverse exogenous environmental factors that influence human health, in a chronological epigenetic context. We describe the entire course ...
متن کاملDeterminants of Time Allocation across the Lifespan
This paper lays the groundwork for a theory of time allocation across the life course, based on the idea that strength and skill vary as a function of age, and that return rates for different activities vary as a function of the combination of strength and skills involved in performing those tasks. We apply the model to traditional human subsistence patterns. The model predicts that young child...
متن کاملPerceptions of obesity across the lifespan.
OBJECTIVE Previous research on obesity stereotyping has almost extensively involved looking at the perceptions that 5-21-year-old individuals have toward members of their own age in-group. Very little research has examined how people perceive obesity across the lifespan. The current research begins to address this gap by examining the extent to which individuals between 18 and 77 years of age s...
متن کاملTechnology Usability across the Adult Lifespan
Current interface design guidelines encompass only a subset of the relevant human-factors data, and seem to have evolved more from intuition than systematic empirical research. In order to close the young-old digital gap, we advocate the development of guidelines that are more firmly anchored in a comprehensive understanding of adult lifespan developments in cognition, learning style as well as...
