Crosslinguistic influence in L3 acquisition across linguistic modules

In this study, we investigated crosslinguistic influence (CLI) at developmental stages of third language (L3) acquisition English by Russian–Norwegian children (N = 31). We tested seven linguistic properties within three modules (morphology, syntax and syntax-semantics). compared the L3 learners to Norwegian 90) Russian 74) second (L2) English. predicted simultaneous facilitative non-facilitative CLI in group all modules, as previously acquired languages offered conflicting options. Our predictions were partly supported. On one property, different from both L2 groups, which is line with cumulative languages. four conditions, performed like more accurate group, indicating influence. two groups alike, showing high rates accuracy. Taken together, results indicate that obtains on a property-by-property basis, none L1s being sole or primary source CLI.
