Cross Species use of Human Microarray Genotyping Technology for Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) SNP Discovery

چکیده

Previous genetic studies of orangutans (Pongo spp.) have relied mainly upon mitochondrial DNA or microsatellite short tandem repeats (STR) for genomic genotyping analysis. Scientists yet to take advantage the closeness great apes humans analysis by using advanced techniques available human genotyping. To genotype at Tanjung Puting National Park, we developed a novel combination methyl-based magnetic enrichment capture fecal with on targeted single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) microarray, and compared this additional micro-capillary We successfully isolated 125 known SNP loci (0.08% those targeted) which hybridized orangutan Illumina Infinium QC array. estimated diversity relatedness (r) three estimators total 32 (21 female 9 male) wild Camp Leakey study site. Average TrioML within sample, from our combo SNP/STR dataset, was range consistent half first cousins (r = .082). All sampled males females had relatives site indicating verified local, closely related community Leakey.

Speciation and intrasubspecific variation of Bornean orangutans, Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus.

Mitochondrial DNA control region sequences of orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) from six different populations on the island of Borneo were determined and analyzed for evidence of regional diversity and were compared separately with orangutans from the island of Sumatra. Within the Bornean population, four distinct subpopulations were identified. Furthermore, the results of this study revealed marked...

Philopatry and reproductive success in Bornean orang-utans (Pongo pygmaeus).

Behavioural observations suggest that orang-utans are semi-solitary animals with females being philopatric and males roaming more widely in search of receptive partners, leading to the prediction that females are more closely related than males at any given site. In contrast, our study presents evidence for male and female philopatry in the orang-utan. We examined patterns of relatedness and pa...

The Ontogeny of Gap Crossing Behaviour in Bornean Orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii)

For orangutans, the largest predominantly arboreal primates, discontinuous canopy presents a particular challenge. The shortest gaps between trees lie between thin peripheral branches, which offer the least stability to large animals. The affordances of the forest canopy experienced by orangutans of different ages however, must vary substantially as adult males are an order of magnitude larger ...

Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis in an Orangutan (pongo P. Pygmaeus) in the Amsterdam Zoo

In this paper the alterations of the skeleton of a 42 year old, Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus, Linnaeus, 1760) are described. The skeleton showed typical hyperostosis and calcification on the right side of the thoracic vertebrae, consistent with the skeletal disease known in human pathology under the name of Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis (DISH, ankylosing hyperostosis). ...

Pregnancy diagnosis in the orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) using the subhuman primate pregnancy test kit.

A determination was made of the gestational interval over which the Subhuman Primate Pregnancy Test, a hemagglutination inhibition test for urinary chorionic gonadotropin, accurately indicated conception and the continuation of pregnancy in an orangutan (Pongo pygmaseus). The initial positive diagnostic test response occurred about 8 months before parturition and positive responses continued th...
