Teachers of the deaf, signed language interpreters, and associated staff (e.g., secretaries sanitation workers) are a salient part deaf child’s community often because hearing parents other family members children do not become proficient signers leading many adults to feel alienated in home environment dinner table syndrome). Because school provides another way for acquire language, professional fluency is critical. Yet, second acquisition contexts, necessary effective teaching highly racialized. If perceived dependent on proximity whiteness, teaching, then why it require professionals be fluent languages before working with children?
