Cover crops reduce soil resistance to penetration by preserving soil surface water content

چکیده

Abstract Replacement of bare fallow in rotations by cover crops is a promising tool to reduce crusting, although the interactions with soil moisture and effect crop species are still not well understood. The objective this work was determine how modify surface response penetration their relation water content. Two winter crops, barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) vetch (Vicia sp. L.), were compared treatment 10-year field experiment central Spain. Soil resistance content intensively measured (76 sampling dates) at two depths, using types penetrometers. Under crop, number very dry events reduced around 20%, fallow. closely related (R2 = 0.65) affected it through modification. In line, greater mulch provided respect vetch, increased prior main seeding, resulting less during critical period. good performance resulted reduction more than 60% between 3rd 8th year (7.2–2.9 kg cm?2, respectively). Even under fallow, strength decreased after ten years tillage. Therefore, maintenance residues over together tillage enhanced conditions steadily risk crust formation. Expected enhancement main-crop germination, infiltration, aeration erosion mitigation may be attained cover-cropping degraded soils.

Differential Soil Acidity Tolerance of Tropical Legume Cover Crops

In tropical regions, soil acidity and low soil fertility are the most important yield-limiting factors for sustainable crop production. Using legume cover crops as mulch is an important strategy not only to protect the soil loss from erosion but also to ameliorate soil fertility. Information is limited regarding tolerances of tropical legume cover crops to acid soils. A greenhouse experiment wa...

Influence of cover crops and soil amendments on okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) production and soil nematodes

A pot experiment to determine the effects of summer cover crops and soil amendments on okra yields and population densities of various soil nematode taxa was conducted in two consecutive growing seasons in a subtropical region. Two cover crops, sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea) and sorghum sudangrass (Sorghum bicolorrS. bicolor var. sudanense), were grown and returned to the soil with fallow as a c...

Effects of compaction and cover crops on soil least limiting water range and air permeability

Crop rotations that include tap-rooted species of cover crops may help alleviate the deleterious effects of soil compaction on plant growth by modifying soil physical properties. We studied the effects of compaction and cover crops on the least limiting water range (LLWR) and air permeability in the surface layers of a loamy (Exp. 1) and a sandy soil (Exp. 2). There were three compaction treatm...
