Coupling Microbial Electrolysis Cell and Activated Carbon Biofilter for Source-Separated Greywater Treatment

چکیده
Reclamation and reuse of wastewater are increasingly viewed as a pragmatic tool for water conservation. Greywater, which includes from baths, washing machines, dishwashers, kitchen sinks, is dilute stream, making it an attractive stream extraction non-potable water. However, most previous studies primarily focused on passively aerated biological physicochemical treatment processes greywater treatment. Here, we investigated integrated process microbial electrochemical cell (MEC) followed by granular activated carbon (GAC) biofilter The system could achieve 99.3% removal total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) 98.7% the anionic surfactants (linear alkylbenzene sulphonates) synthetic at hydraulic residence time (HRT) 25 h (1 day MEC 1 GAC biofilter). For one-day HRT, maximum peak volumetric current density was 0.65 A/m3, comparable to that achieved four-day HRT (0.66 A/m3). adsorption identified key mechanism organics surfactants. In addition, recirculation liquid within critical factor in achieving high-rate Although results indicated be standalone greywater, can provide opportunity potential energy recovery greywater. further should focus developing MECs with higher practical operation.

Effect of pre-acclimation of granular activated carbon on microbial electrolysis cell startup and performance.
Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) can generate methane by fixing carbon dioxide without using expensive catalysts, but the impact of acclimation procedures on subsequent performance has not been investigated. Granular activated carbon (GAC) was used to pre-enrich electrotrophic methanogenic communities, as GAC has been shown to stimulate direct transfer of electrons between different microbia...

This study evaluated the efficacy of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)‐coated powdered activated carbon particles as a biofiltration medium. This material exhibited excellent properties as a biofiltration medium with a water holding capacity of 1.39 g H2O/g‐dry PVA; wet porosity of 0.53; and significantly lower pressure drop than that of commonly reported biofilter media such as compost. Bench‐scale biof...
متن کاملMicrobial electrolysis desalination and chemical-production cell for CO2 sequestration.
Mineral carbonation can be used for CO2 sequestration, but the reaction rate is slow. In order to accelerate mineral carbonation, acid generated in a microbial electrolysis desalination and chemical-production cell (MEDCC) was examined to dissolve natural minerals rich in magnesium/calcium silicates (serpentine), and the alkali generated by the same process was used to absorb CO2 and precipitat...
متن کاملA quantitative method to evaluate microbial electrolysis cell effectiveness for energy recovery and wastewater treatment
Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are potential candidates for sustainable wastewater treatment as they allow for recovery of the energy input by producing valuable chemicals such as hydrogen gas. Evaluating the effectiveness of MEC treatment for different wastewaters requires new approaches to quantify performance, and the establishment of specific procedures and parameters to characterize t...
متن کاملMicrobial Removals by a Novel Biofilter Water Treatment System
Two point-of-use drinking water treatment systems designed using a carbon filter and foam material as a possible alternative to traditional biosand systems were evaluated for removal of bacteria, protozoa, and viruses. Two configurations were tested: the foam material was positioned vertically around the carbon filter in the sleeve unit or horizontally in the disk unit. The filtration systems w...
