Coupled Thermal Stress Analysis of Volvo Truck Disc Brake

This paper deals with the coupled thermal structural analysis developed in Volvo heavy truck disc brake as a function of thickness and braking time. A ventilated type was employed by having vents (holes) on its surface, which needs cooling system. When pedal is applied, friction between pad tremendously increases due to heat generated this partitioned into two contacting bodies (disc rotor pad). Both analytical numerical approaches were used carry out analysis. Analytically, transient temperature obtained partial solution approach stress field evaluated elastic von Mises criterion. In approach, response analyzed explicit standard ABAQUS. From both results, high gradient distribution observed at sharp edges disc, causes decrement efficiency an overall drop performance.
