چکیده
We develop the mechanics of combined bending and twisting deformation a one-dimensional filamentous structure with protruding stiff fish-scale-like plates embedded at an angle on surface. Cosserat kinematic formulation along scale contact constraints. This geometrically exact model allows us to bypass limitations small deflection finite element computations, thereby preserving accuracy kinematics. The derived structure–property relationships reveal, for first time, effect slender fish-scale inspired substrate. subsumes previous models pure twisting, but also shows previously unobserved phenomena that arise due coupled effects these loads. These include new interpretation locking behavior, multiple regimes, asymmetric sensitivities one curvature over other, discontinuous transitions in nonlinear moment–curvature torque–twist behaviors, reflecting complex engagement patterns.

Biomimetic substrate control of cellular mechanotransduction.
Extracellular mechanophysical signals from both static substrate cue and dynamic mechanical loading have strong potential to regulate cell functions. Most of the studies have adopted either static or dynamic cue and shown that each cue can regulate cell adhesion, spreading, migration, proliferation, lineage commitment, and differentiation. However, there is limited information on the integrativ...
متن کاملDesign of biomimetic fibrillar interfaces: 2. Mechanics of enhanced adhesion.
This study addresses the strength and toughness of generic fibrillar structures. We show that the stress sigmac required to pull a fibril out of adhesive contact with a substrate has the form sigma(c) = sigma(0)Phi(chi). In this equation, sigma(0) is the interfacial strength, Phi(chi) is a dimensionless function satisfying 0 <or= Phi(chi) <or= 1 and chi is a dimensionless parameter that depends...
متن کاملCoupled Axial-Radial Vibration of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Via Doublet Mechanics
This paper investigates the coupled axial-radial (CAR) vibration of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) based on doublet mechanics (DM) with a scale parameter. Two coupled forth order partial differential equations that govern the CAR vibration of SWCNTs are derived. It is the first time that DM is used to model the CAR vibration of SWCNTs. To obtain the natural frequency and dynamic respon...

Large scale changes to lipid bilayer shapes are well represented by the Helfrich model. However, there are membrane processes that take place at smaller length scales that this model cannot address. In this work, we present a one-dimensional continuum model that captures the mechanics of the lipid bilayer membrane at the length scale of the lipids themselves. The model is developed using the Co...
