ABSTRACT This paper examines the astronomical theory of ice ages James Croll (1821–1890), its influence on contemporaries John Tyndall, Charles Lyell, and Darwin, subsequent development climate change science, giving special attention to work Svante Arrhenius, Nils Ekholm, G. S. Callendar (for carbon dioxide theory), Milutin Milanković theory). Croll's insight that orbital elements triggered feedbacks leading complex changes – in seasonality, ocean currents, sheets, radiative forcing, plant animal life, general placed his Glacial Epoch at nexus astronomy, terrestrial physics, geology.
