Correlated petrology and seismicity indicate rapid magma accumulation prior to eruption of Kizimen volcano, Kamchatka

Abstract The increase in number and intensity of earthquakes during a pre-eruptive crisis is the main basis seismic volcano monitoring. However, strong understanding how these signals relate to magmatic processes magma plumbing systems prior volcanic eruptions crucial for efforts. Here we compare characteristics seismo-volcanic 2010–2013 explosive-extrusive eruption Kizimen volcano, Kamchatka with timescales system. These are inferred from numerical modelling iron-magnesium intracrystalline interdiffusion 88 zoned orthopyroxene crystals dacites silica-rich andesites collected after eruption. We find that eruptible magmas were assembled rapidly mixing process beginning around 1.5 years before eruption, which well correlated onset crisis. conclude observed re-activation marked led destabilization reservoir, followed by
