Corporate social responsibility in the global value chain: A bargaining perspective

Abstract Breaches of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in global value chains (GVCs) pose a managerial challenge for multinational enterprises (MNEs) and threaten both their reputations sustainability. While an MNE-centric perspective on these issues has dominated existing international business research, we show that dynamic view bargaining among actors the GVC can yield novel insights. We draw coalitional game theory develop model where MNE collaborates, monitors, negotiates prices with supplier whose CSR breaches may be revealed by MNE, external agents, or remain hidden. Our illustrates how MNEs face hold-up problem when irresponsible actions suppliers are made public, have power to engage opportunistic renegotiation. Interestingly, greater monitoring MNEs, if not combined specific strategies, negative consequences weakening MNE’s position and, some cases, even prompting more suppliers. advances research sustainability important implications managers researchers alike.
