Ocular immune privilege
The eye attempts to limit local immune and inflammatory responses to preserve vision. This phenomenon, known as ocular immune privilege, is mediated by a combination of local and systemic mechanisms. While immune privilege is believed to protect the eye from day-to-day inflammatory insults, it is not absolute and its mechanisms are still incompletely understood.

Allografts are afforded a level of protection from rejection within immune-privileged tissues. Immune-privileged tissues involve mechanisms that suppress inflammation and promote immune tolerance. There are anatomical features, soluble factors, membrane-associated proteins, and alternative antigen-presenting cells (APC) that contribute to allograft survival in the immune-privileged tissue. This...

PURPOSE To determine whether the inflammation of endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU) and experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis (EAU) alters key in vivo and in vitro parameters of ocular immune privilege. METHODS For EIU induction, C3H/HeN mice received 200 microg lipopolysaccharide (LPS). For EAU induction, B10.A mice were immunized with 50 microg interphotoreceptor retinoid-binding protein (IRBP...
متن کاملOcular Immune Privilege and the Faustian Dilemma
JL he eye and the immune system represent discrete organ systems in vertebrates. Each possesses a unique and vital function that ensures the viability of the host, and loss of either or both brings disease and death. For many years, it has been known that the eye and the immune system are joined in a curious phenomenon called "immune privilege." This phenomenon was first described experimentall...
متن کاملThe immune privilege of corneal grafts.
Keratoplasty is the oldest and one of the most successful forms of solid tissue transplantation. In the United States, over 33,000 corneal transplants are performed each year. Unlike other forms of tissue transplantation, keratoplasties are routinely performed without the aid of tissue typing or systemic immunosuppressive drugs. In spite of this, 90% of the first-time corneal transplants will s...
