چکیده

We describe two carnivoran coprolites found in the pseudokarst natural carnivore trap of Batallones-3, from Late Miocene Spain. The larger one, comprising multiple indistinguishable fragments broken and corroded bones, indicates that producer dropping might have been highly capable crushing softer parts large bones. On other hand, smaller one shows several relatively more complete bone fragments, thus exhibiting a greater capacity to break swallow portions bone. external morphology coprolite is similar extant bears, whereas closely resembles living insectivorous hyaenid Proteles morphology, on viverrid Genetta size, hand. hypothesize amphicyonid Magerycion anceps was jackal-sized basal Protictitherium crassum excreted one. Thus, we present first direct evidence durophagous diet carnivorans Batallones.

Trace element analyses indicative of paleodiets in Middle Miocene mammals from the Somosaguas site (Madrid, Spain)

Trace element analysis of fossil bone and enamel constitutes a useful tool to characterize the paleoecological behavior of mammals. Up to now, most trace element studies have focused on Plio-Pleistocene fossils. Here, we show that paleodietary inferences based on trace element analyses can be also obtained from ~14Ma old Miocene mammals, in a period of time when important paleoclimatic changes ...

Origin of an Assemblage Massively Dominated by Carnivorans from the Miocene of Spain

Carnivoran-dominated fossil sites provide precious insights into the diversity and ecology of species rarely recovered in the fossil record. The lower level assemblage of Batallones-1 fossil site (Late Miocene; Madrid Basin, Spain) has yielded one of the most abundant and diversified carnivoran assemblage ever known from the Cenozoic record of mammals. A comprehensive taphonomic study is carrie...

Evidence of Leishmania infantum Infection in Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) in a Natural Area in Madrid, Spain

Leishmaniasis is one of the most important neglected zoonosis and remains endemic in at least 88 developing countries in the world. In addition, anthropogenic environmental changes in urban areas are leading to its emergency world wide. Zoonotic leishmaniasis control might only be achieved by an integrated approach targeting both the human host and the animal reservoirs, which in certain sylvat...

Early evidence for complex social structure in Proboscidea from a late Miocene trackway site in the United Arab Emirates.

Many living vertebrates exhibit complex social structures, evidence for the antiquity of which is limited to rare and exceptional fossil finds. Living elephants possess a characteristic social structure that is sex-segregated and multi-tiered, centred around a matriarchal family and solitary or loosely associated groups of adult males. Although the fossil record of Proboscidea is extensive, the...
