Copper mediates life history responses of Daphnia pulex to predation threat

چکیده

A key challenge for ecological and ecotoxicological risk assessment is to predict the of organisms when exposed simultaneously multiple stressors in sub-lethal concentrations. Here, we assessed whether concentrations an anthropogenic stressors, heavy metal copper (Cu), mediates impacts a natural threat species, predation risk, among six distinct Daphnia pulex clones. We investigated interaction between two on morphological defenses several life-history traits including maturation time, size at maturity, somatic growth rate survival rates. Combining life table experiment response surface design, found no evidence that effects predator cue induced responses tested D. However, our data indicate can mediate risk. For age also clear observed varied by clones were strong or weak responders. Specific exploration relationship history under suggest hypothesis strategies deal with stressors. While interactions different make it harder their outcomes, ultimately assess water quality regulations about such study provides theory aid understanding predicting impacts.

The Covariance Structure of Life-history Characters in Daphnia Pulex.

The genetic covariance structure for life-history characters in two populations of cyclically parthenogenetic Daphnia pulex indicates considerable positive correlation among important fitness components, apparently at odds with the expectation if antagonistic pleiotropy is the dominant cause of the maintanence of genetic variation. Although there is no genetic correlation between offspring size...

Predation Life History Responses to Increased Temperature Variability

The evolution of life history traits is regulated by energy expenditure, which is, in turn, governed by temperature. The forecasted increase in temperature variability is expected to impose greater stress to organisms, in turn influencing the balance of energy expenditure and consequently life history responses. Here we examine how increased temperature variability affects life history response...

Evolutionary history of contagious asexuality in Daphnia pulex.

Asexual taxa are short-lived, suggesting that transitions to asexuality represent evolutionary dead-ends. However, with high rates of clonal origin and coexistence of asexuals and sexuals via selective asymmetries, asexuality may persist in the long term as a result of a dynamic equilibrium between clonal origin and extinction. Few such systems have been studied in detail. Here, we investigate ...

Effects of physical interference on life history shifts in Daphnia pulex.

Daphnia pulex were reared in 50 ml flasks, each containing 1, 20 or 40 individuals, which were serially connected with a 20-mum mesh screens between, in order to examine the effect of physical interference due to crowding on shifts of life history traits throughout two consecutive generations. A flow-through system, designed to maintain a sufficient food supply and minimize the accumulation of ...

The Distribution of Life-history Variation in the Daphnia Pulex Complex.

In the midwestern United States the Daphnia pulex complex consists of a mosaic of sexual and asexual populations, providing a useful model system for studying the evolutionary forces underlying the maintenance of sex. One asexual and two sexual populations were surveyed for genetic variation for isozymes, mitochondrial DNA, and life-history characters. While the sexual populations exhibited sub...
