Copper entrapment and immobilization during cement hydration in concrete mixtures containing copper tailings

چکیده
The use of copper tailings as supplementary cementitious material can reduce the environmental impacts concrete production and mining industry. A key concern limiting its application is potential leaching toxic metals from matrix, especially copper. To analyze risk leaching, mechanisms by which entrapped in matrix were investigated, combining microscopic spectroscopic approaches. Decreasing water-to-binder ratio was statistically relevant to leaching. Scanning Electron Microscope micrographs allowed spatially localize enriched clusters within hydration products. In early stages (i.e., 24 h), no spatial correlation between products found; however, after seven days, associated with calcium silicate hydrates. Cu K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy provided insights into chemical speciation matrix. It showed that sulfide oxide phases persisted, whereas sulfate prone dissolution reprecipitation cupric hydroxides induced relatively high pH formed during hydration. Promoting formation further alkaline better understanding metal entrapment could lead new strategies mobility elements when using tailings, increasing their a replacement cement. With this knowledge, it expected answer if possible improve there once entrapped.

Investigation of Rutting Performance of WMA Mixtures Containing Copper Slag
Copper slag (CS) is an abrasive blasting grit made of granulated slag from metal smelting processes. As copper slags are known to be waste material and cause a lot of environmental problems, it would be a good idea to use them in different sections of industry such as pavement construction. On the other hand, in order to save energy and reduce the amount of pollutants re...
متن کاملRecovery of Copper from Copper Slag and Copper Slag Flotation Tailings by Oxidative Leaching
Copper smelter slag and copper smelter slag flotation tailings were leached using sulphuric acid solutions, without or with the addition of either ferric sulphate or hydrogen peroxide. Copper extraction from the slag was typically found to be twice as high as that from the slag flotation tailings. Hydrogen peroxide was determined to be the best lixiviant. Thus, copper and iron extractions were ...
متن کاملPlant-Mediated Changes in Soil N-Cycling Genes during Revegetation of Copper Mine Tailings
Nitrogen limitation represents a major bottleneck during the revegetation of mine tailings. However, controls over key nitrogen-cycling genes in rhizospheric soils under differential vegetation management remain poorly understood. The abundance and transcriptional activity of nitrogen-cycling genes and the enzymatic activity of nitrogen transformation are mediated differentially during revegeta...
متن کاملAccelerated weathering of biosolid-amended copper mine tailings.
Application of municipal biosolids to mine tailings can enhance revegetation success, but may cause adverse environmental impacts, such as increased leaching of NO3- and metals to ground water. Kinetic weathering cells were used to simulate geochemical weathering to determine the effects of biosolid amendment on (i) pH of leachate and tailings, (ii) leaching of NO3- and SO4(2-), (iii) leaching ...
