چکیده
Cut-Off Lows (COLs) in the Southern Hemisphere and mechanisms involved their development are investigated detail using eddy kinetic energy (EKE) budget applied to data from ERA-Interim reanalysis. This approach considers most important processes that typical for evolution of midlatitude disturbances such as baroclinic (BRC) barotropic (BRT) conversions, ageostrophic flux convergence (AFC), known downstream development. Composites volume-integrated EKE its components evaluated based on 200 intense SH COLs (>98th percentile) observed a 36-year period. Results show AFC together with BRC conversion contributors growth COLs, characterizing The plays an role genesis intensification phases while is system maintenance. dissipation occurs due dispersive fluxes (ageostrophic divergence) other not directly computed equation, friction latent heat release which problematic reanalysis datasets. BRT contributes negatively COL by transferring zonal flow energy, though this enough dampen intensification. Regional differences were found energetics, indicating originating upstream continents clearly dominated fluxes, systems over Australian region mostly driven processes.

A climatology of cutoff lows in the Southern Hemisphere
[1] The occurrence of cutoff lows (COLs) in the Southern Hemisphere at 500 hPa is studied for a 31-year period using atmospheric NCEP-NCAR reanalysis. The methodology combines objective detection and tracking for cyclonic systems with visual inspection in order to select those systems that segregate equatorward from the main westerlies. Hemispheric charts and frequency distributions are present...
متن کاملThe nonlinear downstream development of baroclinic instability
The downstream development in both space and time of baroclinic instability is studied in a nonlinear channel model on the f -plane. The model allows the development of the instability to be expressed on space and time scales that are long compared to the growth rates and wavelengths of the most unstable wave. The unstable system is forced by time-varying boundary conditions at the origin of th...
متن کاملBarotropic and Baroclinic Annular Variability in the Southern Hemisphere
The leading patterns of large-scale climate variability in the Southern Hemisphere are examined in the context of extratropical kinetic energy. It is argued that variability in the Southern Hemisphere extratropical flow can be viewed in the context of two distinct and largely independent structures, both of which exhibit a high degree of annularity: 1) a barotropic structure that dominates the ...
متن کاملFilamentation Time Diagnosis of Thinning Troughs and Cutoff Lows
This paper analyzes synoptic-scale trough-thinning processes using a filamentation time diagnostic. The filamentation time diagnostic is derived from the potential vorticity equation expressed in spherical coordinates in the horizontal plane and the isentropic coordinate in the vertical direction. The diagnostic is an accurate measure of stirring processes under the condition of ‘‘slowly varyin...
متن کاملBaroclinic anomalies associated with the Southern Hemisphere Annular Mode: Roles of synoptic and lowfrequency eddies
[1] Using the ERA-40 reanalysis data, we study the different roles of synoptic and low-frequency eddies in sustaining the latitudinal shift of the low-level baroclinicity associated with the Southern Hemisphere Annular Mode. The eddy effect is assessed through the direct eddy thermal forcing via eddy heat flux and the indirect forcing via eddy-driven mean meridional circulation (MMC). We find t...
