Contribution of organic carbon to the total specific surface area of soils with varying clay mineralogy

Soil specific surface area (SA) reflects the quantity and quality of soil mineral organic fractions. For samples that have similar clay types, content or carbon (OC) contents are good predictors SA. However, magnitude OC contribution to SA for different types is unclear, particularly since varies depending on which method probe molecule used measure it. Consequently, we set out (i) quantify total soils with varying mineralogy, (ii) assess effect (EGME H2O) water sorption direction We utilized 330 (clay = 1 89 %; silt 2 78 0.03 34.9 %) were grouped according mineralogy content. The was measured using EGME adsorption (SAE) desorption (SAH2O). examined regression partial correlation analyses combined clay, silt, as explanatory variables. Results showed SAE values strongly correlated SAH2O, except OC-rich where significantly lower than SAH2O. Apart from montmorillonite-rich samples, smaller Organic had a positive SAH2O all sample groups, samples; 7.5, 10.7, 13.9 m2/g per %C illite-rich, kaolinite-rich respectively. There no significant Partial accounted confirmed negative dominated by montmorillonite minerals. can conclude investigated here (except montmorillonitic soils), has SA, depends type.
