Contractional salt deformation in a recently inverted basin: Miocene to current salt deformation within the central Algerian basin

چکیده
Field analogues illustrating the early stage of deformation shortening structures in salt-bearing orogenic fold-and-thrust belts are not yet well illustrated literature. The relatively young Messinian salt Algerian basin could represent a good case example such systems. Basin is deep-water Miocene back-arc including layer mobile evaporites up to 2 km thick. was deposited an already inverted basin, after its extensive stage. Its inversion initiated Tortonian, with N-NW induced by north-westward motion African plate. In this study, we use new 2D multichannel seismic data identify, classify and map throughout central re-assess structural style. We interpret contractional tectonic structures, as buckle folds, squeezed diapirs related sheets evidence regional thick-skinned episodes. conclude that horizontal displacement loading has driven within since deposition. also show spatial variations style Basin, both along- down-dip. demonstrate initial shortening-related late focussed along margin later shifted outward toward Balearic Plio-Quaternary. shifting front interpreted be result thickening strengthening overburden. second peak may have reactivated faults Emile-Baudot escarpment deformation. observe variation intensity from SW NE, which due variable applied or pre-shortening distribution salt.

Upper Miocene Salt Layer in the Western Mediterranean Basin
THE problem of salt deposits in a present deep-sea basin has been discussed recently in the case of the Atlantic Oceanl. In this article we present new data on the salt layer in the Western Mediterranean Basin. In the Balearic Basin and the Ligurian Sea, anticline structures and dornes disturbing the upper part of the sedimentary cover have been reported by Alinat and Cousteauz, Menard et aL3, ...
متن کاملDiscordant paleomagnetic direction in Miocene rocks from the central Tarim Basin: evidence for local deformation and inclination shallowing
From exposures at the southeastern end of the Maza Tagh range in the central Tarim Basin (latitude: 38.5‡N; longitude: 80.5‡E), 55 paleomagnetic sites were collected from red mudstones and sandstones of the Miocene Wuqia Formation. Thermal demagnetization revealed a high unblocking temperature characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM). Five sites collected across a kink fold yield a positive...
متن کاملDevelopment of a new creep testing equipment to obtain long-term deformation parameters of salt rocks
Creep phenomenon in rock engineering plays a key role in development of underground spaces as they must be stable enough for a long period of time. Current research involved designing and manufacturing of a new creep testing machine. The equipment is capable to perform simultaneous light-duty creep tests on more than one cylindrical rock samples at a very low cost.To evaluate the equipment’s pe...
متن کاملCompression of Oceanic Lithosphere: An Analysis of Intraplate Deformation in the Central Indian Basin
Intraplate compressional deformation in the Central Indian Basin is expressed as linear E-W trending topographic undulations and geoid anomlies with characteristic spacings of approximately 200 km. To elucidate the nature of this deformation, we develop models of an oceanic lithosphere in a state of horizontal compression. The lithosphere is treated as a viscous or plastic layer of uniform stre...
متن کاملVertical Transport and Mixing in the Salt-Lake Basin
A month-long meteorological field campaign VTMX (Vertical Transport and MiXing), sponsored by the Department of Energy’s Environmental Meteorology Program, was conducted during October 2000 in the Salt Lake Valley to perform complex investigation of vertical transport and mixing in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) [1]. Approximately 100 people from 9 research laboratories and two universiti...
