Continuum theory of vacancy-mediated diffusion
We present and solve a continuum theory of vacancy-mediated diffusion (as evidenced, for example, in the vacancy driven motion of tracers in crystals). Results are obtained for all spatial dimensions, and reveal the strongly nongaussian nature of the tracer fluctuations. In integer dimensions, our results are in complete agreement with those from previous exact lattice calculations. We also ext...
متن کاملThe Generalized Maxwell-Stefan Model Coupled with Vacancy Solution Theory of Adsorption for Diffusion in Zeolites
It seems using the Maxwell-Stefan (M-S) diffusion model in combination with the vacancy solution theory (VST) and the single-component adsorption data provides a superior, qualitative, and quantitative prediction of diffusion in zeolites. In the M-S formulation, thermodynamic factor (Г) is an essential parameter which must be estimated by an adsorption isotherm. Researchers usually utilize the ...
متن کاملNothing moves a surface: vacancy mediated surface diffusion.
We report scanning tunneling microscopy observations, which imply that all atoms in a Cu(001) surface move frequently, even at room temperature. Using a low density of embedded indium "tracer" atoms, we visualize the diffusive motion of surface atoms. Surprisingly, the indium atoms seem to make concerted, long jumps. Responsible for this motion is an ultralow density of surface vacancies, diffu...

متن کاملPlastic deformation, vacancy diffusion, and vacancy delocalization in bcc 3He.
The plastic deformation of bee 3He crystals has been studied near the melting curve, in the temperature range 0.65 K :::; T:::; 1.17 K, and for strain rates, E, from 2X 10to 2X 10sec-I. The resulting relations between strain rate and stress, at a given temperature, are accounted for in terms of dislocation climb and vacancy diffusion in the solid He. The temperature dependence of the strain rat...
