Continuous Variation in an Aposematic Pattern Affects Background Contrast, but Is Not Associated With Differences in Microhabitat Use

چکیده

Variation in aposematic signals was once predicted to be rare, yet recent years it has become increasingly well documented. Despite increases the frequency with which polytypism and polymorphism have been suggested occur, population-wide variance is rarely quantified. We comprehensively sampled a subpopulation of poison frog Oophaga sylvatica , species polytypic across its distribution also shows considerable within-population polymorphism. On one hand, color pattern could result multifarious selection acting balance different signaling functions leading evolution discrete sub-morphs occupy fitness peaks. Alternatively, simply due relaxed selection, where variation would continuous. used visual modeling conspecific heterospecific observers quantify extent within population phenotypic assess whether this produced distinct signals. found that, despite variation, not partitioned into groups, but rather all viewers likely perceive as Similarly, we no evidence that contrast either enhanced or diminished frogs’ chosen microhabitats compared alternative patches conspecifics were observed. Within therefore does seem indicative strong toward multiple strategies, divergence arisen weak purifying neutral processes, on signal highly salient both predators.

CCL22 16C/A Genetic Variation is not Associated with Breast Carcinoma in Southern Iranian Population

Background: CCL22/MDC is a CC chemokine with a critical role in regulation of the immune balance in physiological condition. CCL22/CCR-4 ligation has been documented to participate in the migration of regulatory T (Treg) cells and Th2 lymphocytes to the site of breast tumors; circumstances that are known to be associated with poor prognosis. Objective: To investigate the association of a single...

Accurate memory for colour but not pattern contrast in chicks

The visual displays of animals and plants often look dramatic and colourful to us, but what information do they convey to their intended, non-human, audience [1] [2]? One possibility is that stimulus values are judged accurately - so, for example, a female might choose a suitor if he displays a specific colour [3]. Alternatively, as for human advertising, displays may attract attention without ...

Obesity is not associated with contrast nephropathy

BACKGROUND Exposure to radiocontrast media may result in acute kidney injury (AKI) or traditionally defined contrast nephropathy (CN), both of which may lead to increased morbidity and mortality. The pathogenesis of both these variants of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) may involve inflammatory mediators that lead to renal impairment. A link between obesity and inflammation has been clearly ...

Microhabitat use affects brain size and structure in intertidal gobies.

The ecological cognition hypothesis poses that the brains and behaviours of individuals are largely shaped by the environments in which they live and the associated challenges they must overcome during their lives. Here we examine the effect of environmental complexity on relative brain size in 4 species of intertidal gobies from differing habitats. Two species were rock pool specialists that l...
