Continuous Flow Glycolipid Synthesis Using a Packed Bed Reactor

Glycolipids are a class of biodegradable biosurfactants that non-toxic and based on renewables, making them sustainable alternative to petrochemical surfactants. Enzymatic synthesis allows tailor-made production these versatile compounds using sugar fatty acid building blocks with rationalized structures for targeted applications. Therefore, glycolipids can be comprehensively designed outcompete conventional surfactants regarding their physicochemical properties. However, enzymatic glycolipid processes struggling both sugars solubilities in reaction media. Thus, continuous flow represent powerful tool designing efficient syntheses esters. In this study, catalyzed by Novozyme 435® is presented as an unprecedented concept. A biphasic aqueous–organic system was investigated, allowing the simultaneous solubilization acids. Owing phase separation, remaining non-acylated glucose easily separated from product stream refed reactor forming closed-loop system. Productivity process higher compared batch one, space–time yields up 1228 ± 65 µmol/L/h. temperature 70 °C resulted highest glucose-6-O-decanoate concentration Packed Bed Reactor (PBR). Consequently, design biocatalytic step towards more competitive aim industrialization.
