Contact model for elastically anisotropic bodies and efficient implementation into the discrete element method

چکیده

We introduce a contact law for the normal force generated between two contacting, elastically anisotropic bodies of arbitrary geometry. The only requirement is that their surfaces be smooth and frictionless. This obtained from simplification exact solution to continuum elasticity problem takes familiar form Hertz’ law, with difference being orientation-dependence material-specific modulus. remarkably accurate when compared solution, wide range materials surface geometries. describe computationally efficient implementation into discrete element method code, taking advantage precomputation modulus over all possible orientations. Finally, we showcase application examples based on real where elastic anisotropy particles induces noticeable effects macroscopic behavior. Notably, second example demonstrates ability engineer tunable vibrational band gaps in one-dimensional granular crystal by mere rotation constituent spherical particles.

Multiple-contact discrete-element model for simulating dense granular media.

This article presents a new force model for performing quantitative simulations of dense granular materials. Interactions between multiple contacts (MC) on the same grain are explicitly taken into account. Our readily applicable MC-DEM method retains all the advantages of discrete-element method simulations and does not require the use of costly finite-element methods. The new model closely rep...

Discrete Element Simulation and the Contact Problem

This paper addresses the problem of contact detection in discrete element multibody dynamic simulations. This paper presents an overview of the problem and a detail description of a new object representation scheme called the discrete function representation (DFR). This representation is designed to reduce the computational cost of both contact detection and the more diicult problem of contact ...

Evaluation of an FPGA Implementation of the Discrete Element Method

The Distinct Element Method (DEM) is a numerical method for the simulation of the behaviour of media consisting of discrete particles, and is widely used for process optimization in the food and pharmaceutical industries. The DEM is very computationally expensive, but has properties that make it amenable to acceleration by reconfigurable computing. This paper presents the design of an implement...

Accepted Manuscript a Constrained Finite Element Method Satisfying the Discrete Maximum Principle for Anisotropic Diffusion Problems

Nonlinear constrained finite element approximations to anisotropic diffusion problems are considered. Starting with a standard (linear or bilinear) Galerkin discretization, the entries of the stiffness matrix are adjusted so as to enforce sufficient conditions of the discrete maximum principle (DMP). An algebraic splitting is employed to separate the contributions of negative and positive off-d...
