Constructivism: Pragmatic Utopianism

This article provides an overview of the history Constructivism and its essential theory practice in Soviet Russia 1920s early 1930s, focusing particularly on various areas design activity, including architecture furniture, graphic photography, sculpture textiles. Consequently, it analyses detail several designs that embody most clearly Constructivist approach. Some these were produced by original members Working Group Constructivists (Aleksandr Rodchenko, Varvara Stepanova, Aleksei Gan, etc.), while others devised artists who never officially joined group but embraced ideas (The Vesnin brothers, Gustavs Klucis [Gustav Klutsis], Lyubov Popova, Vladimir Tatlin, etc). The author acknowledges Constructivists’ aspiration to transform material environment could be considered utopian conditions Russia’s social, economic, industrial circumstances 1920s, she stresses there was also a very strong element pragmatism practice, which is evident way they tackled real problems offered eminently practical solutions everyday difficulties. argument supported detailed analyzes certain objects.
