چکیده
Abstract Results from the Sample Analysis at Mars‐evolved gas analyzer on board Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover constrained alteration history and habitability potential of rocks sampled across Siccar Point unconformity in Gale crater. The Glasgow member (Gm) mudstone just below had evidence acid sulfate or Si‐poor brine Fe‐smectite to Fe amorphous phases, leaching loss Fe‐Mg‐sulfate exchange unfractionated sulfur 34 S (δ = 2‰ ± 7‰) with enriched (20‰ 5‰, Vienna Cañon Diablo Troilite). Carbon abundances did not significantly change (322–661 μgC/g) consistent carbon stabilization by Al‐ Fe‐hydroxide phases. Gm no detectable oxychlorine extremely low nitrate. Nitrate (0.06 wt.% NO 3 ), (0.13 ClO 4 high C (1,472 μg C/g), Fe/Mg‐sulfate concentration (0.24 SO ) depleted −27‰ 7), were detected Stimson formation (Sf) eolian sandstone above unconformity. Redox disequilibrium through detections iron sulfide supported limited aqueous processes Sf sandstone. brines acidic fluids altered but alter underlying mudstones further contact. Chemical differences between suggested that fluid interaction was minimal rocks. These results subsurface after placement. Aqueous along could have provided habitable conditions some cases, N levels heterotrophic microbial populations.

Mars atmosphere. Mars methane detection and variability at Gale crater.
Reports of plumes or patches of methane in the martian atmosphere that vary over monthly time scales have defied explanation to date. From in situ measurements made over a 20-month period by the tunable laser spectrometer of the Sample Analysis at Mars instrument suite on Curiosity at Gale crater, we report detection of background levels of atmospheric methane of mean value 0.69 ± 0.25 parts pe...

[1] Spirit’s Mössbauer (MB) instrument determined the Fe mineralogy and oxidation state of 71 rocks and 43 soils during its exploration of the Gusev plains and the Columbia Hills (West Spur, Husband Hill, Haskin Ridge, northern Inner Basin, and Home Plate) on Mars. The plains are predominantly float rocks and soil derived from olivine basalts. Outcrops at West Spur and on Husband Hill have expe...
