Conservative transport of dissolved sulfate across the Rio Madre de Dios floodplain in Peru

چکیده
Abstract Mineral weathering plays a primary role in the geologic carbon cycle. Silicate by carbonic acid consumes CO2 and stabilizes Earth's climate system. However, when sulfuric drives weathering, can be released to atmosphere. Recent work has established that resulting from sulfide mineral oxidation is globally significant particularly important rapidly eroding environments. In contrast, if SO42− produced reduced during continental transit, then release may negated. Yet, little known about how much reduction takes place terrestrial We report oxygen sulfur stable isotope ratios of river waters mass budget calculations, which together suggest pyrite Peruvian Andes mountains conservatively exported across ∼300 km Amazon floodplain. this system, floodplain does not counteract large flux Andean or measurably affect composition riverine SO42−. Elevated Mercury Concentrations in Humans of Madre de Dios, Peru
The enormous increase in practically unregulated mining in Madre de Dios Peru is leading to massive release of liquid elemental mercury to the environment. Rapidly increasing global prices for gold are causing a massive upsurge in artisanal mining in the Peruvian Amazon, considered to be one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. This study identifies the current levels of mercury in the ...
متن کاملCOMMUNITY VULNERABILITY TO MALARIA IN MADRE DE DIOS, PERU by
Construction of a highway and artisanal gold mining have contributed to population and land use changes within the department of Madre de Dios, Peru. Such changes are expected to alter malaria rates due to impacts on vector habitat and human exposure. Vulnerability, as defined by the possibility of bereavement of a physical good or abstract state, is useful for understanding which communities a...

Community perceptions of health and rodent-borne diseases along the Inter-Oceanic Highway in Madre de Dios, Peru
BACKGROUND Madre de Dios is located in the southeastern Amazonian region of Peru. Rodents have been estimated to be the reservoirs for up to 50 % of emerging zoonotic pathogens, including a host of viruses, bacteria, and parasites. As part of a larger study involving both human and animal research, this study serves to obtain a broader understanding of the key challenges and concerns related to...
متن کاملRiver transport of mercury from artisanal and small-scale gold mining and risks for dietary mercury exposure in Madre de Dios, Peru.
Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is a major contributor to deforestation and the largest anthropogenic source of atmospheric mercury worldwide. Despite significant information on the direct health impacts of mercury to ASGM miners, the impact of mercury contamination on downstream communities has not been well characterized, particularly in Peru's Madre de Dios region. In this area,...
