Connectivity modelling informs metapopulation structure and conservation priorities for a reef‐building species

چکیده

Aim In coastal marine systems, biogenic reef-building species have great importance for conservation as they provide habitat a wide range of species, promoting biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and services. Biogenic reef persistence recovery from perturbations depend on recolonization by new recruits. Characterizing larval dispersal among distant reefs is key to understanding how connectivity shapes metapopulation structure determines network coherence; all which are critical effective conservation. Location Northeast Atlantic coast western English Channel, France. Methods We used biophysical transport model simulate the polychaete Sabellaria alveolata. combined modelling analysis into framework aiming identify areas pathways, whose presence in vital its overall coherence. evaluated changes pathways constrained different thresholds, i.e., minimum rate connection. tested scenarios sequential loss reefs: randomly, quality (a score status occupancy an area) or betweenness centrality metric (BC; quantifying proportion shortest paths connecting that passing through any given area). Results found S. alveolata forms two main regional clusters, connected only weak sporadic events. Within each cluster, characterized relatively high neighbouring with reefs, maintained even under higher thresholds. Simulating further identified those highest BC values, Main conclusions Effective this important requires protected designed sustain combination locally source act stepping stones reefs.

Remotely Sensed Data Informs Red List Evaluations and Conservation Priorities in Southeast Asia

The IUCN Red List has assessed the global distributions of the majority of the world's amphibians, birds and mammals. Yet these assessments lack explicit reference to widely available, remotely-sensed data that can sensibly inform a species' risk of extinction. Our first goal is to add additional quantitative data to the existing standardised process that IUCN employs. Secondly, we ask: do our ...

Metapopulation Dynamics and Amphibian Conservation

In many respects, amphibian spatial dynamics resemble classical metapopulation models, in which subpopulations in breeding ponds blink in and out of existence and extinction and colonization rates are functions of pond spatial arrangement. This “ponds-as-patches” view of amphibian spatial dynamics is useful in several respects. First, it highlights the importance of regional and landscape proce...

Distribution patterns of Convolvulaceae in Iran: priorities for conservation

Assessing priorities is the most important action in conservation programs. Rudimentary, mapping of diversity, and distribution patterns have been used to set priorities on diverse scales. The distribution patterns of plant taxa, largely reflect an actual ecological niche. Convolvulaceae s.str exhibits cosmopolitan dispersal of diverse life forms and includes 50–60 genera comprising 1600–1700 s...

Conservation planning and priorities

Maybe the first law of conservation science should be that human population—which of course drives both threats to biodiversity and its conservation—is distributed unevenly around the world (Cincotta et al. 2000). This parallels a better-known first law of biodiversity science, that biodiversity itself is also distributed unevenly (Gaston 2000; Chapter 2). Were it not for these two patterns, co...

Rapid conservation assessment for endangered species using habitat connectivity models

To avoid extinction of rare species in regions of active environmental change, strategic approaches are needed to manage remaining habitat. When observations of dispersal or metapopulation information are not available, habitat connectivity simulations may offer a valuable alternative source of information to assess threats and evaluate conservation options. For the Critically Endangered San Ma...
