Conjunctive Water Management for Agriculture With Groundwater Salinity

چکیده
Salt accumulations in aquifers significantly affect and transform the conjunctive use of surface water groundwater supporting irrigated agriculture. accumulates under many semi-arid lands where pumping has lowered levels enough to prevent drainage saline from basin. This paper provides new insights into optimal management pumping, recharge, water, cropping patterns with salinity hydrologic variability an region, such as California's western San Joaquin Valley, reducing agricultural crop yields revenues. A two-stage stochastic quadratic model explores this problem prescribe economically mix operation policies over a 10-year period probabilistic annual availability, considering salinity's harm yields. At low salinity, usually pumps most drier years, supplied by additional recharge wetter years. In contrast, at higher less years while more when allows dilution saltier groundwater. Reduced substantially reduces region's ability support higher-value perennial crops or eliminates lower-value dry Artificial fresh can have economic value slowing salination which

Conjunctive surface water and groundwater management under climate change
Climate change can result in significant impacts on regional and global surface water and groundwater resources. Using groundwater as a complimentary source of water has provided an effective means to satisfy the ever-increasing water demands and deal with surface water shortages problems due to robust capability of groundwater in responding to climate change. Conjunctive use of surface water a...
متن کاملWater transfers, agriculture, and groundwater management: a dynamic economic analysis.
Water transfers from agricultural to urban and environmental uses will likely become increasingly common worldwide. Many agricultural areas rely heavily on underlying groundwater aquifers. Out-of-basin surface water transfers will increase aquifer withdrawals while reducing recharge, thereby altering the evolution of the agricultural production/groundwater aquifer system over time. An empirical...
متن کاملOptimal Regional Conjunctive Water Management
The severe drought in the western United States in 1976-78 brought the problems of allocating extremely limited water resources to the attention of agriculturalists and urbanites alike. Greatly reduced surface water supplies exacerbated the already critical pressure on remaining groundwater stocks in the same areas. The chronic overdraft of many western states groundwater basins can be attribut...
متن کاملDrainwater Management for Salinity Mitigation in Irrigated Agriculture
Salinity and drainage management options include source control, reuse, and evaporation ponds. This article identifies efficient strategies to maintain hydrologic balance in closed drainage basins and evaluates their impact on regional agricultural profits. Theoretical analysis suggests that economic efficiency requires acknowledgment of the nonseparability between water use and land value. Emp...
