Concentrations of urinary neopterin, but not suPAR, positively correlate with age in rhesus macaques

چکیده

Identifying biomarkers of age-related changes in immune system functioning that can be measured non-invasively is a significant step progressing research on immunosenescence and inflammaging free-ranging wild animal populations. In the present study, we aimed to investigate suitability two urinary compounds, neopterin suPAR, as activation inflammation rhesus macaque ( Macaca mulatta ) population. We also investigated age-associated variation gene transcription from blood samples understand underlying proximate mechanisms drive or suPAR. Neopterin was significantly positively correlated with age, had moderate within-individual repeatability, indicating it applicable biomarker changes. The are not apparently driven by an increase primary signaler neopterin, IFN-y, but may instead both CD14+ CD14− monocytes. suPAR low repeatability within-individuals, likely better suited measure acute rather than chronic increases (i.e., “inflammaging”). correlation 25%, they often signal different processes, which if disentangled could provide nuanced picture immune-system function when tandem.

Age, but not anthelmintic treatment, is associated with urinary neopterin levels in semi-free ranging Barbary macaques

Studying host parasite interactions and their implications for evolution and ecology recently received increasing attention, particularly with regard to host physiology and immunity. Here we assess variation of urinary neopterin (uNEO), a marker of cellular immune activation and iummunosenescence, in response to age and anthelmintic treatment in semi-free ranging Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvan...

Tolerant Barbary macaques maintain juvenile levels of social attention in old age, but despotic rhesus macaques do not.

Complex social life is thought to be a major driver of complex cognition in primates, but few studies have directly tested the relationship between a given primate species' social system and their social cognitive skills. We experimentally compared life span patterns of a foundational social cognitive skill (following another's gaze) in tolerant Barbary macaques, Macaca sylvanus, and despotic r...

In Captive Rhesus Macaques, Cervicovaginal Inflammation Is Common but Not Associated with the Stable Polymicrobial Microbiome

Vaginal inoculation of rhesus macaques (RM) with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) has been used to study the biology of HIV transmission. Although the results of vaginal SIV transmission experiments could be affected by vaginal inflammation, studies to date have been conducted without regard to levels of pre-existing genital inflammation present in RM. We collected cevicovaginal secretions (...

oral zinc supplementation positively affects linear growth, but not weight, in children 6-24 months of age

background:childhood zinc deficiency is a common problem in many developing countries where people rely mainly on plant based diets with low zinc contents. zinc supplementation is one of strategies to combat zinc deficiency and its consequences in children. the aim of this community trial was to examine the effect of zinc supplementation on the linear growth of children 6-24 months of age and t...

Biliary and urinary neopterin concentrations in monitoring liver-allograft recipients.

Biliary neopterin concentrations were measured daily in nine liver-transplant recipients during the early post-transplant period (on average, 25 days). Concentrations increased strongly during rejection episodes and decreased quickly after successful antirejection therapy. Contrary to the changes of urinary neopterin, cytomegalovirus infection and hepatitis were not associated with an increase ...
