Computer Assisted Surgery and 3D Printing in Orthopaedic Oncology: A Lesson Learned by Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery

چکیده
Primary bone sarcomas are rare tumors and surgical resection in combination with chemo radiation therapy is the mainstay of treatment. Some specific anatomical sites still represent a reconstructive challenge due to their complex three-dimensional anatomy. In recent years, patient instruments along 3D printing technology has come innovative techniques orthopaedic oncology. We retrospectively reviewed 23 patients affected by primary sarcoma treated patient-specific custom made prostheses. At follow up after approximately two infection rate was 26%, mechanical complication 13%, local recurrence 13% (with five-years implant survival 74%). Based on our experience, custom-made prostheses represents reliable safe technique for improving accuracy tumour, particular use pelvic surgery ameliorating functional results.

Computer Assisted Planning in Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery
In cranio-maxillofacial surgery physicians are often faced with the reconstruction of massively destroyed or radically resected tissue structures caused by trauma or tumours. Also corrections of dislocated bone fragments up to the complete modeling of facial regions in cases of complex congenital malformations are common tasks of plastic and reconstructive surgeons. With regard to the individua...
متن کاملComputer assisted orthopaedic surgery -- CAOS.
The use of computer navigation in orthopedic surgery allows for real time intraoperative feedback resulting in higher precision of bone cuts, better alignment of implants and extremities, easier fracture reductions, less radiation and better documentation than what is possible in classical orthopaedic procedures. There is no need for direct and repeated visualization of many anatomical landmark...
متن کاملA communication system supporting simultaneous planning and execution in cranio-maxillo-facial surgery.
This paper describes the development of a system for simultaneous planning and execution of surgical operations in the cranio-maxillo-facial area. Simultaneous planning and execution is the process of taking an implicit task description, planning a sequence of explicit execution commands (e.g. for robots) and monitoring their execution. As the execution planning process is run completely on-lin...

These are just a few representative applications of the synergistic use of computer and robotic technology assisting the orthopaedic surgeon. While the individual systems are certain to change over time, the basic principles of correlating radiographic and anatomic data through a registration process, and displaying additional instrument or implant information through smart tools and surgical n...
متن کاملComputer-assisted surgery in orthopedic oncology
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE In orthopedic oncology, computer-assisted surgery (CAS) can be considered an alternative to fluoroscopy and direct measurement for orientation, planning, and margin control. However, only small case series reporting specific applications have been published. We therefore describe possible applications of CAS and report preliminary results in 130 procedures. PATIENTS AND...
