Computationally efficient alternative to a full-scale transient simulation of a reheating furnace

Reheating of steel slabs in a reheating furnace is an intermediate step the long and complicated process making. Reheat furnaces heat to about 1200 °C, which makes suitable for hot rolling. During this temperature uniformity within slab very important. A detailed understanding hence, important both from perspective product quality energy use. Unfortunately, extreme conditions inside do not allow experimental investigation. Numerical tools like Computational Fluid Dynamics are useful such situations, but full-scale transient models often lead unpractically high computational costs. In paper, Truncated Transient Slab Model validated, capable predicting behaviour during computationally efficient way. This accomplished by coupling two different models: steady-state model complete truncated domain around single slab. The replicates flow much smaller domain. advantage modelling approach when compared significant reduction simulation time (just 4 days) while maintaining grid resolution. Compared experiments, simulations have average accuracy 4–5% entire range temperatures (28– °C) surface core. error on drop-out was 2% at measured 1185 °C.
